Preview season for Magic the Gathering Foundations has officially begun, with the first few cards filtering through into the world. If you don't know what Foundations is, it's basically a new set from the folks over at Wizards of the Coast that is filled with staple cards and doesn't rotate out of the Standard format until at least 2029. It's a fantastic set that is designed to not only get new players into the game, but make cards more accessible for those already building decks and playing in tournaments.

The product line up includes your typical Play Boosters and Collector Boosters, as well as a Bundle and Jumpstart Boosters. However, newly introduced with Foundations is the Starter Collection and Beginner Box, both clearly aimed at newer players to help them get started.

Beginner Box

The Beginner Box is designed to be the perfect place to learn the ropes of Magic the Gathering. It works both for brand new players, and those wanting to teach their friends how to play in a more neutral environment, as jumping straight into your LGS's weeklies can be quite intense.

Inside the box you will find 10 themed Jumpstart Packs, which are pre-determined and designed for beginner play. You'll also find 2 reference cards, 1 reference guide booklet, 2 How To Play guides, 2 Gameboard playmats and 2 Spindown life counters. It has all the essentials to kick off your new TCG addiction! The themes for this box seem to be Vampires and Cats, with Liliana and Ajani boasted on the front, so expect to see them show up.

Starter Collection

The Starter Collection is the second brand new product in this set, which is jam packed with cards! There are over 350 cards from across Magic's history, alongside the tools you need to build your first deck. Deck building is important if you're wanting to develop those pre-cons to be stronger and stand a chance against tournament regulars, or even just to build your own from scratch brand new. It's an integral part of the game that is important for your development as a player, but can increase the fun you'll have (especially your first time beating someone with a deck you've built yourself!) It's important to note that select Foundations cards included in the Starter Collection that are there to support Commander will not be legal in Standard.

That's not to say any pre-con decks aren't great, they are! The game has just been around for so long that many people have some incredibly souped-up decks, so the Starter Collection is a great way to give yourself the edge when coming up against different opponents. It's also a great way to understand the cards, the mechanics and how they all flow together - reading the card does explain the card, but a deck won't function if the cards don't work together like clockwork.

The Starter Collection comes with 350+ Magic the Gathering cards (including traditional foil cards), 3 Foundations Play Boosters, 90 Basic Lands (10 are full-art basic lands), 14 Tokens, 2 Reference Cards, 1 How To Build Your Deck booklet and 1 click wheel life counter!

The Cards

Before Previews Season even began, we knew we'd be getting a handful of staples such as Llanowar Elves and Omniscient. We also expected to see Liliana and Ajani, due to their presence on the box. As more Previews come out, we'll be updating this blog regularly, so keep an eye out! (And with over 350 cards existing in this set, it's going to be a massive one to collect.) We recently got to see what those Liliana and Ajani cards look like and what they do! As they are reprints, folks who have seen these cards before know what to expect, but can still view the glory of new artwork.

+1 Loyalty: Put a +1/+1 counter on up to one target creature.

-3 Loyalty: Target creatures gains flying and double strike until end of turn.

-8 Loyalty: Create X 2/2 white Cat creature tokens, where X is your life total

4 Starting Loyalty

Whenever a creature you control dies, draw a card.

+1 Loyalty: Create a 2/2 black Zombie creature token.

-4 Loyalty: Each player sacrifices two creatures of their choice.

-9 Loyalty: Each opponent chooses a permanent they control of each permanent type and sacrifices the rest.

+1 Loyalty: Look at the top four cards of your library. You may reveal a creature or land card from among them and put into your hand. Put the rest on the bottom of your library in a random order.

-3 Loyalty: Destroy target artifact, enchantment or creature with flying.

-8 Loyalty: You get an emblem with "Creatures you control get +2/+2 and have vigilance, trample and indestructible."
