JUST ANNOUNCED: Celebrate Dungeons & Dragons 50th Anniversary with this Secret Lair Super Drop!
Updated 20/08/2024
The final cards from the Dungeons & Dragons x Secret Lair Super Drop have been revealed! On Thursday & Friday last week, news outlets gave us a peek at the remaining cards for Karlach's Rage and what to expect with Death is in the Eye of the Beholder II (it's more beholders, who'd have guessed!)
You can check out the reveals down below, but we'll quickly dive into those long-awaited Karlach cards:
Stranglehold
Enchantment
Your opponents can't search libraries.
If an opponent would begin an extra turn, that player skips that turn instead.
"Let's cook with fire, baby."
This card. Wow. Stranglehold is going to be such a powerful card against decks that search libraries. To prevent all your opponents from doing this? You would hold the battlefield for as long as this card is present. Definitely a must for red-decks.
City on Fire
Enchantment
Convoke
If a source you control would deal damage to a permanent or player, it deals tripe that damage instead.
"Avernus was never my home...."
This card truly channels Karlach's undeniable rage. Triple damage against a permanent or player - imagine combining this with a creature with Trample and a high Power/Toughness? Not only that, but it has Convoke too.
Overall, if you're a MTG fan or a Dungeons & Dragons fan, you might want to pick this set up! It becomes available on August 27th, so be sure to get in line as these will likely sell out fast!
Updated 15/08/2024:
Even more Secret Lair cards have been revealed for the Dungeons & Dragons 50th Anniversary! This time we get to see what Death in the Eye of the Beholder I has in store for us. There's a strong focus on Blue and Black mana in this set, with a board wipe standing proud in Beholder's Petrification Ray which makes total sense if you're a Dungeons & Dragons player.
Petrification Ray: The targeted creature must make a DC (8+Spellcasting Ability+Proficiency Bonus) Dexterity saving throw. On a failed save, the creature begins to turn to stone and is restrained. It must repeat the saving throw at the end of its next turn. On a success, the effect ends. On a failure, the creature is petrified until freed by the greater restoration spell or other magic.
Destroy all creatures. For each nontoken creature destroyed this way, you create a tapped Treasure token.
The Beholder's Petrification Ray sorcery will be massive against Green decks that like to pump out as many creatures as possible, as quickly as possible. Keep in mind this spell will also affect you, so if you find yourself struggling with getting creatures out onto the battlefield and you have this card in your hand, casting it may be as a benefit to you as everyone has to board wipe. Imagine the devastation, especially going against a friend playing a card like Ambush Commander, Living Lands, or Nature's Revolt where lands are considered creatures (speaking in a non-tournament sense as these cards are not Standard Legal).
Keep checking back for more updates regarding the Secret Lair drops, and check out the card reveals below!
Updated 14/08/2024:
Over the past few days, we've seen some exclusive looks at what's to come in two of the Dungeons & Dragons x Secret Lair Super Drop, particularly for Astarion and An Exhibition of Adventure. There are 5 cards for Astarion's Thirst, and 7 in An Exhibition of Adventure. What's interesting about these cards in particular is that they are designed with original artwork from Dungeons & Dragons' first debut 50 years ago!
Within An Exhibition of Adventure you will find some OG artwork of a Beholder, the Player's Handbook and the Basic Red Dragon! If you've been a long-time fan of Dungeons & Dragons, and you're a Magic Player, perhaps this is definitely a set to pick up.
Inside An Exhibition of Adventure the cards are as follows:
Faithless Looting
Original 02/08/2024:
Dungeons & Dragons is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, and we've seen a slew of exciting products and events that have been coming out in the past few months. As they are currently at GenCon in Indianapolis, they've been showing off the latest iteration of the Player's Handbook, as well as some other goodies. But without a shadow of a doubt, the most anticipated reveal for this year has to be the Dungeons & Dragons x Secret Lair Super Drop!
This is bound to be the most anticipated Secret Lair of 2024, featuring iconic characters from their award winning video game Baldur's Gate 3. We've been spoiled with a glimpse at only two of the cards so far, fan favourites Karlach and Astarion. What we know so far is there will be five new drop sets with this Super Drop, and they are as follows;
- Secret Lair x Dungeons & Dragons: Astarion's Thirst
- Secret Lair x Dungeons & Dragons: Karlach's Rage
- Secret Lair x Dungeons & Dragons: An Exhibition of Adventure
- Secret Lair x Dungeons & Dragons: Death is in the Eyes of the Beholder I
- Secret Lair x Dungeons & Dragons: Death is in the Eyes of the Beholder II
From these names, we're expecting to at least see an array of exciting D&D monster cards akin to what we've seen in sets Adventures from the Forgotten Realms and Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate. There may even be a feature of some classic D&D art from the original release! Either way, we're buzzing with excitement for more announcements around this drop. Will you be picking it up? Let us know in the comments!
