Take a first look at Edge of Eternities from Magic the Gathering!
With Final Fantasy in our rear-view mirror, it's time to gear up for a Multiverse like no other! Edge of Eternities spoiler season is nearing, and we've already been given a first look at some of the cards to expect - including the headliner card! But before we get into that, let's discuss what you need to know about this upcoming Magic the Gathering set.
Brand New Artifacts
When you're doing a space-themed set, you've gotta have one of the most important forms of transport to get around. That's where Spacecrafts come in! This is an all new Artifact, powered by the station ability (which taps another creature you control to put charge counters on the Spacecraft). The card we've been shown is The Seriema, a 5/5 Legendary Artifact Spacecraft with a 2 White 1 Colourless mana cost that allows you to search your library for a legendary creature card, reveal it, put it into your hand then shuffle. The fact this card has a Power/Toughness is important, and leads us onto our next point nicely.
Commander Rules are changing!
With Edge of Eternities, we’re seeing the Commander format evolve - allowing you to bring any legendary card with a printed power and toughness as your Commander! This means legendary Vehicles, Spacecrafts and anything else that has a power/toughness to lead your deck into the frey. It opens up so many avenues for gameplay, and potential counters for decks you struggle to go against. In the case of The Seriema, it’s printed ability gives other tapped legendary creatures you control indestructible.
The Headliner for Edge of Eternities
We’ve mentioned previously that Magic the Gathering are beginning to launch new sets with a Headliner card, this is the pull you’re all hunting for. Whether it be for bragging rights, your collection or just a flashy card on the battlefield - the card you’re looking for is Sothera, the Supervoid. Quite fitting, given that it’s a supermassive black hole at the centre of this universe. Finished in a textless singularity foil treatment, Sothera is a 2 Colourless 2 Black mana cost Legendary Enchantment that allows you to utilise exiled cards to your advantage.
Whenever a creature you control dies, each opponent chooses a creature they control and exiles it.
At the beginning of your end step, if a player controls no creatures, sacrifice Sothera, then put a creature card exiled with it onto the battlefield under your control with two additional +1/+1 counters on it.
This could be truly powerful if you can get the pulls just right, but even if you aren’t running a deck that features Black Mana you’ll definitely want to add this to your binder. Or frame it. Or put it in a safe.
Commander Decks
Edge of Eternities launches with two Commander Decks; Counter Intelligence and World Shaper. These decks get their own individual mention due to the fact their commanders are borderless legendary creatures. Correct us if we’re wrong, but this is the first time a borderless card has been the commander in a pre-constructed deck! Kilo, Apogee Mind is the commander for Counter Intelligence and Szarel, Genesis Shepherd is leading the charge in World Shaper. More details about these decks will be revealed in time, so be sure to check back regularly for updates!
The Card List
Usually, we’d put a card list below with all the cards, their mana cost and numbers - but we’re expecting this set to be so massive we just wouldn’t have room! So we’ll give you some honourable mentions, and you can check out the full card list as it’s revealed down below.
