Everything we know about Shadows of the Galaxy! (Set List, Spoilers and MORE!)

Update: 08/07/2024

The leader unit cards for Moff Gideon and the Mandalorian have been revealed, along with their abilities for combat.

Star Wars Unlimited - Shadows of the Galaxy - Moff Gideon

First up, we have Moff Gideon, a formidable commander equipped with a pre-constructed Vigilance and Command deck. His strategy focuses on overpowering enemy units. Gideon's ability enhances units that cost 3 or less, and when he's on his unit side, those units also gain Overwhelm. This creates a strong synergy with units like the Phase-III Dark Trooper (Shadows of the Galaxy, 84), which can benefit from Gideon's boost and further enhance its own power. If your opponent upgrades one of their units, Calculated Lethality (Shadows of the Galaxy, 39) can eliminate it while granting more Experience tokens to your Dark Trooper. Once you've amassed enough resources, deploy Gideon’s Light Cruiser (Shadows of the Galaxy, 242) to revive a fallen Dark Trooper at no additional cost.

On the other side, we have The Mandalorian, equipped with a pre-built deck that emphasizes Cunning and Vigilance aspects. His special ability lets you exhaust an enemy unit when you play an upgrade, creating effective combos throughout his deck. For instance, you can utilize The Mandalorian's ability to exhaust an enemy unit when you play an upgrade like Wanted (Shadows of the Galaxy, 221). This card assigns a Bounty to the attached unit, rewarding the opponent for defeating or capturing it. Capturing units acts as a temporary removal, placing the captured unit facedown under the capturing (or "guarding") unit and stripping it of all upgrades. If the guarding unit exits play, the captured unit returns to play exhausted under its owner’s control without triggering any “When Played” abilities.

To capture a unit, you need a card that enables this action. For example, you can play Wanted on an enemy unit, exhaust it with The Mandalorian’s ability, then deploy The Mandalorian and equip him with The Mandalorian’s Rifle (Shadows of the Galaxy, 251) to capture the exhausted unit. Capturing the unit allows you to collect its Bounty, letting you ready two resources that can help pay for the Razor Crest (Shadows of the Galaxy, 44) and reclaim the Wanted upgrade. Alternatively, these resources can be used to play Grogu (Shadows of the Galaxy, 196), providing additional options for exhausting enemies.

A long, long time ago in galaxy far, far away...

The next set in the epic Star Wars Unlimited has been revealed as Shadows of the Galaxy! The first expansion has a release date of the 12th of June and will include a ton of characters that we missed in the first set! Moff Gideon, Darth Maul, The Mandalorian, Grogu, Cad Bane and even Doctor Aphra will make an appearance! Keep on reading to see what you can expect from Shadows of the Galaxy!

Products

Although we haven't had a full rundown on what products we can expect from Shadows of the Galaxy, it is inevitable that we will see the traditional Draft Booster Packs and Boxes!

One product that has been confirmed by FFG is the all-important 2 Player Starter Set! As with the previous set, this will contain 2 ready-to-play decks with everything you need to start playing the game with a friend! The Leaders have been confirmed to be The Mandalorian (Din Djarin) and Moff Gideon! If you're a fan of the Mandalorian series then this is definitely something for you!

Keep your eyes peeled, as we'll be posting on our socials as soon as more products are revealed!

Themes and Characters

This set sees a focus on the struggles of the outer rim territories and away from the Imperial Rebellion conflict in Spark of Rebellion. One of the main focuses of Shadows of the Galaxy is the scum and villainy of the franchise as well as Bounty Hunters! Expect to see a ton of Bounty Hunter characters popping up!

As mentioned in the intro, we're also seeing some characters that are brand new to the series! One character that we're pleasantly surprised to see is Doctor Aphra! She is a comic-only character, which really shows how determined the creators are in bringing in characters from all the aspects of the Star Wars universe!

New Mechanics

Along with returning mechanics, we are seeing 3 additional keywords introduced starting with this set! These flow perfectly into the Bounty Hunter theme of the release.

The first new mechanic is Bounty! You can place a bounty on an enemy and then when you defeat that enemy, you collect the bounty! This makes it all the more rewarding when you do knock out an opponents card!

Capture is the second new mechanic and offers an alternate way to get rid of your opponents cards without removing it from play completely. You can capture a unit, which means that you place the captured unit face down underneath the unit that captured it. Your opponent can then rescue their unit when they defeat the capturing unit!

The final mechanic is Smuggle! We know absolutely nothing about the Smuggle mechanic at the moment, but we suspect that it might involve drawing cards or perhaps searching your deck! But only time will tell!
