Magic the Gathering Final Fantasy - Everything you need to know (Card Spoilers, Product Reveals and More!)
Update 19/02/2025:
Hot off the press from the Magic the Gathering reveal comes the full announcement of Final Fantasy, and boy does it look insane! Other than what we revealed yesterday, we've got confirmation that this set is officially a Standard Legal set. Not only that, but it's a tentpole set - meaning it gets all the works! Gift Bundles, 2-Player Starter Kit, Play Boosters and more. This gives you the opportunity to maximise your collection, and even grab some exclusive cards while you're at it!
There were also some card reveals that were dropped, we've added these below. There are a couple of things to note with this set's cards - it's the biggest collection of Final Fantasy artwork in a single game. The artists have done a fantastic job of capturing the essence of what makes Final Fantasy great, whilst keeping the heart of MTG in mind. We've got transforming cards that represent when that boss fight is almost over - but they transform into something bigger and badder. We've got different finishes for cards, such as Surge Foils, unique Showcase cards and even a throwback to the vintage era of Final Fantasy! Artists like Yoshitaka Amano and Tetsuya Nomura get a feature, which will make any Final Fantasy fan thrilled.

The other thing we wanted to mention was the card Jumbo Cactuar. If you've seen this card, it's insane! A 1/7 Plant Creature that shoots 10,000 Needles whenever it attacks - and whenever it attacks it gets +9999/+0 till end of turn. Combine this with something like Trample or Haste and you're unstoppable. We have no doubt that this card will be nuked into oblivion by WOTC, so enjoy it whilst it lasts!
You can sign up to pre-orders for MTGxFinal Fantasy right now to be notified when pre-orders go live! This set releases on the 13th of June, and we cannot wait.
Original 18/02/2025:
Caught in the slipstream of Magic the Gathering's most recent set, Aetherdrift, is a brand new announcement courtesy of IGN. The next Universes Beyond set Final Fantasy reveals the Commander Decks that are due to be released alongside other product lines on the 13th of June 2025. Reminiscent to the Warhammer 40K Commander Decks, these will be available in both standard and Collector Edition decks - meaning there's going to be a big price difference that's worth it between the two.
The names of the decks are as follows;
- Limit Break (
) with Cloud, Ex-SOLDIER as the Commander
- Counter Blitz (
) with Tidus, Yuna's Guardian as the Commander
- Revival Trance (
) with Terra, Herald of Hope as the Commander
- Scions & Spellcraft (
) with Y'shtola, Night's Blessed as the Commander
We're shocked that Tifa or Sephiroth were not chosen as a Commander, but we expect them to be powerhouses in one of the above decks when the deck list is revealed - only time will tell. This is the first Universes Beyond set that is Standard Legal, and is designed to be Drafted, which is an interesting twist from the previous sets. The game will feature characters from Final Fantasy 6, 7, 10 and 14 in particular - but we're expecting to see a few other faces from other games show up.
It'll be interesting to see how Magic the Gathering utilises the abilities within Final Fantasy, especially considering there is already a Final Fantasy Card Game. We're really excited to see the twist WOTC put on this theme, and can already tell its going to be an incredibly popular set.
Little else is known at this moment in time about Universes Beyond: Final Fantasy - so stay tuned for any announcements that are to come. Check out the cards that have been revealed thus far down below, and right now you're able to sign up for the Commander Deck pre-orders!
