MTG Universes Beyond: Assassin's Creed Previews - Card List, Spoilers and More!
Update 19/06/2024:
Last night, Wizards of the Coast revealed a selection of the upcoming cards for Universes Beyond: Assassin's Creed! There were cards we had predicted to be included, with Assassins such as Ratonhnhaké:ton (Connor Kenway, for those who are unsure) and fan favourite Edward Kenway, as well as the Apple of Eden. But there were also some cards we never even thought of being included, such as Lydia Frye from Assassin's Creed Syndicate or even Shaun & Rebecca, Desmond and Layla's helpful associates. Even Pre-Assassin Ezio gets a card, now that opens doors to feature many of the Assassin's in their various stages of life. Can we expect to see old man Ezio? Or even Pre-Assassin Edward Kenway living his best (or perhaps worst, given the trapped-on-a-desert-island context...)
Not only that, but we got a good look at the lands to come which feature a stunning landscape that makes one whole image of Florence, and even Abstergo Entertainment Industries gets its own card! If you're a fan of Assassin's Creed this set is definitely for you.
If you're a passionate Magic player, then listen up! With this latest set comes some new and returning Mechanics! First up we have the new mechanic Freerunning, a staple within the Assassin's Creed universe. If you aren't parkouring your way to the next objective, you're doing it wrong! With Freerunning, if your Commander or Assassin has dealt combat damage to a player this turn you can use this mechanic with an updated charge! Here's an excerpt from Magic the Gathering:
Freerunning is a new alternative cost that allows you to cast spells for a bit of a savings if earlier in the turn an Assassin you controlled or a commander you controlled dealt combat damage to a player. The Assassin and/or commander doesn't even have to be alive or under your control. As long as it dealt combat damage to a player earlier in the turn, the freerunning cost is now available to you.
Though you have an updated charge for casting spells, this does not mean that the mana value changes.
Some returning mechanics are Historic, Disguise and Cloak. We'll start with Historic! This term refers to artifacts, things with the legendary supertype, and Sagas. The way Historic comes into play is when a card refers specifically to an effect on "Historic", for example; Exile Abstergo Entertainment: Return up to one target historic card from your graveyard to your hand, then exile all graveyards. However, keep in mind that when the card abilities reference specifics such as "Historic spells", things like Lands will not be affected by this as they are not spells.
With Disguise, it was pretty obvious something like this would see a return - being an assassin is all about blending in (it's literally a mechanic in the video game!) Basically, your card is hidden and takes on the identity of a face-down creature spell, it becomes a colourless 2/2 with no name or creature type. It will have ward {2} and no other abilities, no mana cost (so it has a mana value of 0). But to cast it, you pay an alternative cost of {3}. You can pay the disguise cost to reveal the card any time you have priority, it happens immediately and doesn't use the stack therefore cannot be responded to.
Finally, Cloak makes a comeback - a similar way of going incognito. Cloak is a reference to when assassins will hide amongst specific crowds, or raise their hoods to avoid suspicion or being recognised. Cloak in MTG works similar to Disguise where you must place it face down, it's a 2/2 colourless creature with no name, creature type or mana cost. It also has ward {2} and no other abilities. Where this differs from disguise is that, rather than paying the disguise cost, you turn a cloaked permanent face up at any time if it's actually a creature card by paying its mana cost.
Check out the rest of the reveals down below, and come back regularly to keep up with what to expect in this latest Universes Beyond set! If you haven't already, you can place your pre-orders with us now in time for release day on July 5th!
Original 18/06/2024:
Magic the Gathering's latest endeavour into expanding IP reaches once again into the realm of video games with Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed next in line. Universes Beyond is a sub brand of the MTG TCG which brings characters and stories from other popular culture into the Planes. We've had entries such as the iconic Fallout, the classic Lord of the Rings, and even seen Digital Sensation Hatsune Miku find her way into our Secret Lair Drops! We're now welcoming the Brotherhood, as we prepare for Assassin's Creed to land on our shelves on July 5th!
What can we expect with Assassin's Creed?
The obvious thing to expect first would be a feature of all the mainline assassins, such as Ezio Auditore, Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad, Eivor and more. After all, it wouldn't be an Assassin's Creed set without any Assassins! We've also already been shown some previous upon this set's announcement with cards featuring the Animus, Leonardo da Vinci, and even language-specific cards (Greek for Cleopatra, Italian for Leonardo, so on and so forth.) But as Magic the Gathering has more than just characters under its belt, we'd expect to see an abundance of Artifacts and Enchantments that are nods to the series, such as the Leap of Faith or the Apple of Eden. It'll be interesting to see what effects these cards will have!
Beyond Boosters
As always with subsets, you can expect an array of different products to help you with your collection. The first being the newly introduced Beyond Boosters, with their premiere during this set replacing the previous Epilogue Boosters that had a poor reception from fans. These boosters will contain 7 cards; non-foil uncommons, non-foil land or scene cards ,non-foil rare/mythics, a traditional foil, and a "booster fun" slot (nonfoil or foil.) The slots are as follows:
- Slot #1-3: Nonfoil Common
- Slot #4: Nonfoil Land or Scene Card (May contain Rare or Mythic Rare)
- Slot #5: Nonfoil Rare/Mythic
- Slot #6: Traditional Foil (May contain Uncommon, Rare or Mythic Rare)
- Slot #7: Booster Fun (Nonfoil or foil, may contain contain Uncommon, Rare or Mythic Rare)
- Slot #8: Token/AD
A Booster Fun card is an alternate version of cards that will feature unique artwork, treatments and appearances, which means if you're a collector you'll love these boosters!
There will be a 2-Player Starter Kit with Assassin's Creed featuring Ezio and Eivor. The titular cards will be finished in a traditional foil, and are named Ezio, Blade of Vengeance and Eivor, Battle Ready. Little else is known about the contents of the decks themselves, but inside you will find 2 ready-to-play 60 card decks, 1 Learn-to-Play Guide and 2 boxes to store your decks. They're perfect if you're new to Magic the Gathering, or even if you're a big fan of Assassin's Creed!
A classic addition to almost every recent set of Magic the Gathering is the Bundle. Filled with amazing goodies, this bundle is plastered with Assassin's Creed iconography. Each bundle contains a pack of basic lands, nine Beyond Boosters and a special spin down life counter featuring the Brotherhood symbol. You'll even get a sweet promo card, which is yet to be revealed!
As always, the Collector Booster is not going anywhere. The highest price point in the Magic the Gathering TCG, these boosters are the pinnacle for collectors or those who heavily invest their money into good looking cards for their decks. Featuring Kassandra on the outside wielding what looks to be the Spear of Leonidas, these booster packs contain 10 of the flashiest cards around!
Often, inside a Collector Booster you'll find cards you wont get in any other product, so they're definitely worth picking up a pack or two of. With this box, you'll even have a chance of pulling a serialized card!
Anything Else?
There are no Commander Decks with this, for those who don't know - as this is a Modern-legal set, but the cards are still legal in formats such as Commander, Legacy and Vintage!
There will also be a Secret Lair drop to polish off this set, much like there was with Fallout. We're unsure of what to expect with the Secret Lair cards, but if we were to hazard a guess we'd reckon they'll be the fanciest of fancy cards featuring the most popular Assassins to date!
