Bloomburrow, Modern Horizons 3 and more revealed at MTG Preview Panel!

Magic Con was happening over the weekend, and for those of you who didn't get the chance to tune in there were a slew of reveals for upcoming sets from Wizards of the Coast! We had a feeling that Outlaws of Thunder Junction would get some info drops, but we were treated to so much more! From returning Planeswalkers to new product types, let's take a look at what was revealed! If you're interested in a particular set, be sure to click the buttons below to jump straight there!

Outlaws of Thunder Junction

Outlaws of Thunder Junction is the next main set in the Magic the Gathering pipeline, and it's set in the wild, wild west! (Kind of..)

In the aftermath of the Phyrexian invasion, a new plane has become available to travel to via the Omenpaths - Thunder Junction. It's a dog-eat-dog world, where familiar faces are flooding to test their fortunes in a new location. So, not only is this plane new to us, but also the Planeswalkers we all know and love! There's one character in particular making an interesting comeback, Oko.

Oko was quite the controversial card at one point, with the card Oko, Thief of Crowns being banned in Standard, Pioneer, Modern, Legacy and a few other formats. We haven't seen Oko in quite a while, but with his return we're excited to see the terror he will continue to bring to the frontline of all our games! Oko, The Ringleader is a Green/Blue Legendary Planeswalker with a slew of exciting moves to choose from. As a nod to his original ability (where you target an artifact or creature, turning it into a 3/3 Elk) Oko can use his shapeshifter abilities to transform into a 3/3 Green Elk. Once Oko becomes a copy of (up to) one target creature you control until the end of turn, he has hexproof (though he is not indestructible.) Though Oko is quite the opponent to come up against, he still relies heavily on how you've set up the rest of your board, so don't go too crazy. He also introduces an interesting new keyword as part of his +1 ability, in which you draw two cards - but discard two cards if you have not committed a crime. But what exactly is a crime? Well...

Crimes

This wouldn't be a rootin' tootin' Plane if there wasn't any crime! Outlaws rule this land, and Oko is the ringleader of the biggest crime gang around. Crimes are committed exactly how you'd expect them to be, attacking your opponent's stuff. If you target them, a creature they control, or another permanent - that's a crime. Who knew that Magic players have actually been criminals since they started playing? We feel this is essentially just giving a role-playing aspect to general mechanics of Magic, though it's interesting to see that any targeting of a player is considered a crime, which gives a new meaning to cards such as Secret Rendezvous and Wedding Ring from Strixhaven and Innistrad: Crimson Vow Commander.

Breaking News!

If you remember the Enchanted Tales Bonus Sheet from Wilds of Eldraine, get ready to say hello to Breaking News Bonus Sheets! This new subset (one of many in Outlaws of Thunder Junction) comes in a newspaper-style border from The Prosperity Post and is available in both Play and Collector boosters!

Finally, the last notable thing to mention is the Vault Treatment. These cards are another special subset within Thunder Junction and have their own set symbol, set code, frame (on select cards) and are Standard legal! Featuring Special Guest cards and 30 mythic rares from The Big Score, these cards have a stunning vault frame and you may even find some with a raised foil effect like that of the Gilded Foil treatment from Streets of New Capenna!

Outlaws of Thunder Junction is looking to be a pretty amazing set! If you're a fan of the cowboy-theme, then definitely invest in a Play Booster or Commander Deck. This set is slated to release on the 19th of April 2024, with Pre-Release week starting the 12th of April 2024. Check out the available products below!

 Modern Horizons 3

Next up on the list of exciting reveals from the weekend is Modern Horizons 3! Following in the footsteps of its predecessors, we're expecting some pretty exciting reprints as well as new-to-Magic cards in its stead! Easily the most exciting returning cards are the ally fetch lands. These are a beloved type of land that allows you flexibility in acquiring the lands you need during the game. You can find these in four styles: a regular frame, Borderless art frame, Extended art and Retro frames. Cards shown off were Bloodstained Mire, Flooded Strand, Polluted Delta, Windswept Heath and Wooded Foothills. Check them out below!

There were, of course, new cards revealed. These show off not only more Eldrazi, but the return of energy! For example, the card Scurry of Gremlins is an enchantment that creates two 1/1 red Gremlin tokens. Then you get the amount of energy counters equal to the number of creatures you control. You can then pay 4 energy tokens to give those creatures +1/+0 and they will gain haste until the end of turn. Other cards such as Flare of Cultivation and Psychic Frog were shown off, but most importantly we got a glimpse at Ajani, Nacatl Pariah // Ajani, Nacatl Avenger which allows you to exile Ajani should one or more other Cats you control die and return him to the battlefield transformed. It seems they're delving deep into the origin stories of some beloved Planeswalkers!

Collector Commander Decks

Arguably one of the most exciting announcements from WOTC was the Collector's Edition Commander Decks. Now, we have seen these before with the likes of Universes Beyond: Warhammer 40,000, but we don't believe there's ever been a deck you'd quite like to frame! These stunning Commander Decks are plastered with artwork from edge-to-edge featuring the titular Commander. Inside you will find 100 foil cards, with every deck containing two Borderless Profile cards. There will also be 15 new-to-Magic cards! What a truly stunning way to elevate your gameplay (in a totally look at how shiny my deck is way.) If they're anything like the Warhammer decks, we're expecting RRP to be over £100 due to the level of detail put into everything from contents to packaging. The Commander Decks featured are: Graveyard Overdrive (B | R | G), Tricky Terrain (G | U), Creative Energy (U | R | W) and Eldrazi Incursion (W | U | B | R | G | Colourless).

Other products in this set include Play Boosters, Collector Boosters, a Bundle, a Gift Bundle, and normal Commander Decks. If you're as excited as we are for Modern Horizons 3, mark the 14th of June on your calendars as the release date! Check out the products below and the premium packaging that comes with, or continue reading for reveals about Assassin's Creed and Bloomburrow!

Universes Beyond: Assassin's Creed

As a continuation of the Universes Beyond series, where popular culture leaks into the world of Magic the Gathering, the Assassin's Order has joined the ranks! Assassin's Creed was announced as the next big Universes Beyond set after Fallout, and if you're a fan of this huge game series then get ready to add iconic characters such as Ezio and Altaïr to your deck! You will find littered throughout this set key moments, items and characters (including real historical figures!) from the games, and we have seen that the set will at least span to Eivor's story from Assassin's Creed Valhalla. With this set, they are also introducing another new product called the Beyond Booster! But what is a Beyond Booster? Let's check it out.

Beyond Boosters

A Beyond Booster is a 7-card booster pack filled to the brim with eye-catching cards. Inside, you will find what we mentioned above: items, characters, and key moments from the game - you can also find Booster Fun versions of cards! These are uniquely curated experiences that are ideal for collectors who are fans of the Assassin's Creed series and Magic the Gathering. You can find these packs both inside a booster box, or a Bundle, where you can get the usual additional items. Inside these packs you will find:

  • 1 Basic land card (or non-foil borderless scene card)
  • 3 Uncommon cards
  • 1 Rare or mythic rare card
  • 1 Traditional foil uncommon, rare, or mythic rare card
  • 1 Showcase uncommon, rare, or mythic rare card (can also be traditional foil)

A Booster Fun card is an alternate version of cards that feature unique artwork, treatments or appearances. They are perfect for collection or playing in your favourite decks. You can also find borderless scene cards which connect to form a larger image. Some of the cards featured in this are Ezio Auditore da Firenze, Leonardo da Vinci and Cleopatra, Exiled Pharaoh! Not only that (you mean more reveals?!) but you can also get Memory Corridor borders (that look like the Animus), Language-Specific Serialised cards (such as Italian for Leonardo da Vinci, or Greek for Cleopatra, Exiled Pharaoh) and stunning etched foils! Check them out below!

Within this set, you will find Beyond Boosters, a Bundle, Collector Boosters and a 2-Player Starter Set. With that, we only have one set left to discuss - so take a moment to look at this AC-rich packaging before moving on!

Bloomburrow

Bloomburrow introduces us to the Valley, a bucolic and vibrant home to animal folk. This looks eerily familiar...

Mabel is a key character within this world, a mousefolk mother and reluctant hero who leads the charge. Only Mabel, Heir to Cragflame, Byrke, Long Ear of the Law, Bria, Riptide Rogue and Lumra, Bellow of the Woods has been revealed cards-wise, but the one frame that stood out to us was the Woodland Showcase. This stunning Root-esque artwork by guest artist David Petersen definitely throws you back to the time of Wind in the Willows.

When Mabel, Heir to Cragflame enters, create a colourless Equipment artifact token with "Equipped creature gets +1/+1 and has vigilance, trample and haste" and equip 2 generic mana.

Though not much else has been revealed, we did get a sneak peek at what Planeswalkers would look like if they were to visit this fabled plane of Bloomburrow! We're expecting to see cards featuring Planeswalkers such as Teferi within the set, and can't wait! The products featured within this set are Play Boosters, Collector Boosters, a Bundle, Commander Decks, and a 2-Player Starter Set. Check out the products below, and if you've gotten this far why not check out the rest of our Magic the Gathering selection by clicking the button at the bottom of this blog!
