Magic the Gathering 2024: What's Releasing This Year?!
2024 is set to be a massive year for Magic the Gathering! But what exactly can we look forward to? Keep reading to learn about all of the releases this year!
Murders at Karlov Manor
9th February
The first set to drop in 2024 is the mysterious Murders at Karlov Manor. The set returns once again to the fan-favourite plane of Ravnica, but doesn't focus on the guilds we all know and love! Instead the cards focus on a murder mystery that runs deep into Ravnican society. Someone has committed a series of murders in the city and Alquist Proft and the Ravnican Agency of Magicological Investigations are racing to uncover the culprit! Will you be able to discover the murderer?
The set is based around a number of murder mystery tropes and offers a lot to fans of that genre! There are a ton of new keywords and mechanics that will make players feel as though they are in a whodunit with a MTG twist!
New Keywords that feature in the set are Suspect, Disguise and Collect Evidence!
- Suspect is a keyword action that can be applied to your own or opposing creatures, representing that all eyes are on them as a dangerous criminal. Once a creature has been suspected, it has menace but can't block. This strongly represents the themes present in Murders at Karlov Manor and we can't wait to try it out!
- Disguise is an all new mechanic that reminds us of the old Morph mechanic. By paying a permanent's disguise cost, or using the cloak keyword action on it, it becomes a 2/2 facedown creature, but unlike with morph and manifest respectively, it has ward 2.
- Collect evidence is a keyword ability representing a cost. To collect evidence X, you must exile cards with total mana value X from your graveyard. Some cards want you to collect evidence, while a few impose it on opponents.
All of the products we have come to expect with a Standard release will launch on the 9th February with one key difference. Murders at Karlov Manor is the first Magic set to include the all new play Booster! WOTC have decided to introduce them primarily due to the popularity of Set Boosters and the relative unpopularity of Draft Boosters. Play Boosters retain the general fun structure of the Set Booster but are now designed to be draftable. This means that constructed players will still get a lot out of their packs, but stores can now stock a smaller number of products and retain the ability to hold limited events such as draft! Play Boosters will contain 15 cards and have a price similar to Set Boosters.
Each Play Booster includes 15 cards:
- 6 Commons
- 1 Common or The List
- 3 Uncommons
- 1 Rare or Mythic Rare
- 1 Basic Land
- 1 Non-foil Wildcard (A card of any rarity from the set. Guaranteed to be non-foil.)
- 1 Foil Wildcard (A card of any rarity from the set. Guaranteed to be foil.)
- 1 Token, art card, play aide, or ad card
Ravnica Clue Edition
23rd February
The next big release for 2024 is Ravnica Clue Edition! This is not a reskin of the classic board game (which UK players will know as Cluedo), but rather an all-new MTG variant that melds the feeling of the board game with classic Magic the Gathering gameplay! Of course, Hasbro is the owner of both Magic the Gathering and Clue, so it is only natural that we are seeing a crossover set, especially given the murder-mystery theme of Murders at Karlov Manor!
Everything you need to play is included in the box! You simply grab 2 booster packs, shuffle them together, and then start playing! This reminds us of Jumpstart, which is a super fun way to play, removing all of the hassles of deck-building that exist in Constructed formats and even drafts.
Each Clue Edition set includes the following:
- 8 Ravnica: Cluedo Edition Boosters, each containing a Jumpstart style half deck
- 21 Evidence cards featuring characters, weapons, and rooms inspired by Clue(do)
- 4 Hidden Info Screens
- 1 Evidence Notepad
- 1 Case File Envelope
- 1 Card Storage Box
Universes Beyond - Fallout
8th March
Magic the Gathering has had massive success in 2023 with their Universes Beyond range, highlighting IPs like Lord of the Rings and Doctor Who! The hit video game franchise Fallout will be the next series to get the MTG treatment! Like the previous few sets, it will consist of 4 Commander Decks and Collector Boosters, the most premium boosters of all! The release date of this set coincides with the brand new Fallout TV series that will debut on Amazon!
The 4 decks will focus on different factions and areas of the game series, with many fan-favourite characters making an appearance!
The 4 decks are:
- Scrappy Survivors a White, Red and Green deck with Dogmeat, Ever Loyal as commander!
- Mutant Menace boasts The Wise Mothman as a commander and has a Blue, Black and Green colour identity
- Hail, Caesar has Caesar, Legion's Emperor filling in as commander and is a White Black and Red deck
- Science! is a White, Blue and Red deck with Dr. Madison Li as commander!
Outlaws of Thunder Junction
19th April
This Wild West-themed set has the distinction of being Magic's 100th expansion! The set will be the last entry in the Omenpath arc which consists of Wilds of Eldraine, The Lost Caverns of Ixalan, Murders at Karlov Manor, and finally Outlaws of Thunder Junction! Not much is known about the set at the moment, but we do have a confirmed release date of the 19th of April! This is the first time that we will see Wild West tropes in the game and we can't wait to see what this Western-themed expansion will hold!
Modern Horizons 3
June
The third set in the Modern Horizons series, this set will introduce new cards in the Modern format, without them being legal in Standard first! Very little is known about this set at the moment, but if the previous versions are anything to go by this is not going to be one to sit out!
Universes Beyond - Assassin's Creed
July
2024 will see an additional Universes Beyond set with Assassin's Creed! Not only is this another exciting video game set, the Beyond Booster will be debuting! The Beyond Boosters are yet another type of booster pack that is designed to take you on a journey or tell a story specific to a particular universe! They aren't designed to be draftable, and as far as we know, they will be similar to Epilogue boosters from March of the Machine: The Aftermath! We don't have a specific release date as of yet, but we do know that this Universes Beyond set will be released in July!
Bloomburrow
August/September
Releasing in the back half of the year is the all-new Bloomburrow. Set in the plane of the same name, the expansion stands out in not including any humans. Instead all of the creatures are anthropomorphic animals that talk, walk, wear clothes, wield weapons and cast magic! This world is full of squirrels, frogs, rats, and rabbits, showing that even the smallest creatures can have a big impact. The storyline is supposedly based around a misfit group of critters that must work together to go on an epic quest!
Duskmourn - House of Horror
October
The final product that we currently know about is Duskmourn, which will drop just in time for Halloween! The set features a ton of tropes from the classic haunted house genre and will take inspiration from 70s and 80s horror movies. The plane of Duskmourn consists solely of a gigantic haunted house and we can't wait to get the heeby-jeebies when this set releases!
