Altered TCG Reveals First Expansion called Trial By Frost
Once just an idea on Kickstarter, now a hit across the globe, Altered TCG have announced their first expansion following on from Beyond the Gates. Trial By Frost arrives by snowstorm in January 2025, and with it comes a slew of new additions to keep the TCG thriving. Let's dive into what we should expect come January 31st.
New Mechanics
Much like Pokemon or Magic the Gathering, the folks over at Altered TCG are introducing brand new cards and mechanics to the game - starting off with Gears.
Gears are a new type of Permanent. They are designed to "bolster your expeditions" with the right tool or snack. The theme of Trial By Frost seems to follow an expedition up a treacherous mountain range, where you will combat the elements to complete your ascent. With this in mind, we expect to see certain tools such as picks that would assist a climb, or rations that would keep you fit. One card they have shown is named Arcolano Milk, which is played in an Expedition.

When a Character joins my Expedition - It gains 1 boost and Fleeting. (If it would be sent to Reserve, discard instead.)
Within Trial By Frost, we can also expect to see benefits from the environment. Certain cards will allow us to adapt to the environment and become one with the elements due to working in tandem with different region types. Check out the example provided: Demeter.

Finally, much like climbing any mountain, Trial By Frost will use altitude as a mechanic. If you progress without consideration of the cost, you could become exhausted. Though this may harm some cards, it could benefit others. The final example they show here is a card names Moth Larva.

Adventure Cards
Five brand new Adventure Cards find their way into Trial By Frost booster packs, and are terraformed to create the landscape in which Cais Adarra exists. The Products
So far, all that is confirmed are booster boxes and booster packs at the time of writing this article. We do expect to see Starter Decks being revealed in time, but with a release date of January 31st 2025, this may not be for a while. As soon as we know more, we'll give you all an update!
