Pokémon - TCG League Championship - Saturday (17/12/22)

Saturday saw us hold one of our Pokémon TCG League Championships and it was a fantastic day!

Thank you to everybody who came!

We had 5 rounds of gruelling battles followed by a Top 4 top cut! Lugia and Mew decks were a huge presence at the event with 6 of the top 8 decks featuring one or the other!

After five rounds we had our standings after swiss which saw Jack, Ben, Samuel and Guy head into the final showdowns with Stuart narrowly missing out!

The first round of Top cut saw Guy (Fusion Mew) vs Ben (Palkia/Vikavolt) with Ben coming out on top!

And Samuel (Lugia) vs Jack (Giratina) seeing Jack come out the victor in that game!

The final with Ben (Palkia/Vikavolt) vs Jack (Giratina) was full of twists and turns! Jack eventually managing to overpower Ben and grab the victory!

Here's what Jack had to say about his Finals match:

Game 1: Ben gets Turn 1 item lock, so I'm sat there powering up my Giratina V. He eventually gusts and attacks, I respond with a knockout, then he responds with a Palkia VSTAR knock out.

It came down to Ben winning with Radiant Greninja on the next turn, so I had to Boss's Orders to stall his Vikavolt V and Lost Mine his bench to try and win. He was down all of his switching cards and last prizes were both of his remaining Melony, so I ended up winning.

Game 2: I started Greninja, 2 Mirage Gate, 2 Roxanne and 2 Giratina VSTAR, my top card was Escape Rope, he got Turn 1 item lock again and I scooped after turn 3.

Game 3: He doesn't get Turn 1 item lock and I can establish something. Game 3 went to time, and I was at 3 prizes to his 5.

Turn 0 was Ben's turn and he knocks out a single prize Pokemon to go down to 4 prizes.

Turn 1 is me and my game plan is to set up a Thorton play, by having 2 energies on both my Sableye and Lumineon V. I end my turn by using Lost Mine on a Mew and putting the other 6 counters on Ben's Crobat V, ensuring a checkmate scenario.

Turn 2 Ben responds with Boss's Orders on my ninja to trap it in the active, and then kills the Sableye and Comfey on my bench with his own Greninja, going down to 2 prizes.

Turn 3 I top deck the Thorton to swap out my Lumineon V with my Sableye from the discard pile, and kill his Crobat V with Lost Mine to win the tournament.

Well done Jack on your well deserved victory and enjoy your prizes! He managed to get his hands on the exclusive Champions Playmat along with a huge amount of prize packs!

Thank you also to the rest of the Players and top 8 for making the day what it was!

This is how Top Four shaped up and what they were playing!

  • 1st) Jack Culkin - Playing: Giratina
  • 2nd) Ben Ahmadi - Playing: Palkia/Vikavolt
  • 3rd) Samuel Cheung - Playing: Lugia
  • 4th) Guy Warne - Playing: Fusion Mew

Also an honourable mention to Stuart (playing Lugia) who just narrowly missed out on Top Four, but did manage to get himself into the Top Eight, which shaped up like this:
